Technology
Full bi-directional DNA sequencing is the most sensitive and accurate
method of analyzing DNA. This methodology utilizes sophisticated automated
devices to examine each element of a section of DNA. DNA is composed
of a series of "bases" that are arranged in a particular order.
Alterations in the specified order can cause disease. In the case of
ADPKD, the alterations that cause the disease are in either of two genes,
PKD1 and PKD2.
Now, in a major enhancement to the testing methodology, PKDx utilizes
bi-directional sequencing to determine the precise order of the bases
of a person's PKD1 and PKD2 genes. Although the technology is very complex,
it is performed on a routine blood sample from an individual. The information
it provides can be used by a physician to help understand more clearly
the cause and prognosis of an individual's disease. It can also be used
by the individual for planning
purposes.
